Hello and Welcome, Ole Man Overland has been created as a safe place for 'seasoned' outdoor enthusiasts to join our community to learn and explore the sport of overlanding - whether you own a Jeep 'mall crawler' that's never been offroad, or have invested big time into a serious rig - but just don't have a clue who to ride with, or where to go - we want to help.
'Seasoned' at OMO means you've been around the block - you know a-lot about a-lot of things, but not so much when it comes to driving and exploring offroad. Many of our 'seasoned' folks (usually over 55, like me) have the time and resources available to invest in adventure leisure activities - and camping and the outdoors is a lure to many. B ut the notion of strapping on a backpack and living off the land while hiking the Appalachian trail may have been a dream in our younger days, but it's just not in the cards today.
And the same goes for 'four-wheeling' - some of the rigs built today can crawl up a mountain or dig through a mud pit - which for many of us sounds fun - but without proper training, the right gear, and some confidence only built over time - is just too intimidating.
That's where Overlanding comes into the picture. A phrase originally coined by the Aussie folks at the turn of the century, the modern day simple definition of Overlanding is:
A self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey - not the destination - is the principal goal. (thank Wikipedia...btw).
It provides the opportunity to get off grid, into nature, and rely on yourself - and your vehicle - to make you feel safe, while exploring nature in ways not possible in any other way. Its exciting, yes, but where do you start? Who can you trust, and how to you build your knowledge, and resources? Our goal at OMO is to serve as your most important resource, your community of like minded outdoor folks to bring together the best resources, training, access to quality gear, travel tips, and other useful tools to help you be successful.
While you'll find plenty of original content from OMO, like videos, buying guides, travel checklists, and much more - we will also invest in reviewing and curating other media and resources currently available from the experts in this field. No fluff, endorsements, no commercials - just honest answers and objective reviews from overlanders that have knowledge and experience to share.
Lastly, as our community grows and thrives, we always want to give back to our wonderful planet, so a portion of any profits earned by the company will go back to support those organizations that are most important to our members.
I hope you'll join us. See you on the trail,
- Pete
